What is Cognitive Moral Development?
An individual progresses through distinct stages in their ability to make reasoned moral judgments. People at a higher stage in their moral development will behave better in the face of ethical issues.
There are three levels of cognitive moral development:
Preconventional Level
Conventional Level
Post Conventional Level
There are six stages of cognitive moral development, two per level:
Preconventional Level
Stage 1: Punishment and Obedience Orientation
Stage 2: Instrumental/Exchange Orientation
Conventional Level
Stage 3: Interpersonal Accord Orientation
Stage 4: Law and Order (Social Accord) Orientation
Post Conventional Level
Stage 5: Social Contract Orientation
