What is Cognitive Moral Development?

An individual progresses through distinct stages in their ability to make reasoned moral judgments. People at a higher stage in their moral development will behave better in the face of ethical issues.

There are three levels of cognitive moral development:
  1. Preconventional Level
  2. Conventional Level
  3. Post Conventional Level
There are six stages of cognitive moral development, two per level:
  • Preconventional Level
    • Stage 1: Punishment and Obedience Orientation
    • Stage 2: Instrumental/Exchange Orientation
  • Conventional Level
    • Stage 3: Interpersonal Accord Orientation
    • Stage 4: Law and Order (Social Accord) Orientation
  • Post Conventional Level
    • Stage 5: Social Contract Orientation
    • Stage 6: Universal Ethical Principles Orientation
